SHIRLEY, Mass. — A group of inmates assaulted three correctional officers at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center Friday morning, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Corrections.

The correctional officer was in general population unit N1 when inmates surrounded and assaulted the officer, DOC spokesperson Jason Dobson told Boston 25 News.

Dobson described the incident as a “serious assault” and said the prison was put on lockdown mode, which restricts movement and visits.

A source told Boston 25 News two more officers were assaulted in the incident when called for help via radio. We’re told one officer is in surgery, and one has a fractured jaw and face disfiguration.

The identities of those involved have not yet been released. The Lancaster Fire Department released a statement saying all three were treated for head injuries.

Dobson said the inmates involved have been removed from the general population and will face internal discipline, along with any charges the Worcester County District Attorney’s office could decide to bring.
