Ship explosion off Cape Cod kills 2

BOSTON — Help has finally arrived for a carrier ship after a deadly explosion rocked the vessel off the coast of Cape Cod.

The explosion occurred in a storeroom Monday morning while the Tamar was about 1,300 miles off the Cape.

Initially the ship reported one person had been killed and three more were badly burned in the explosion, but on Monday night the ship’s captain announced the death of a second crew member.

Now the New York Air National Guard at the ship to help it as it continues on to Portugal. The U.S. Coast GUard helped coordinate the response.

As the Tamar nears its destination, the Portuguese Coast Guard will launch a helicopter to pick up those who were injured.

The ship is expected to arrive in Portugal on Wednesday morning.
