Man arrested for OUI and racing following rollover crash in Westwood

WESTWOOD, Mass. — A Norwood man has been arrested for racing and operating under the influence of drugs, among other charges, after causing a rollover crash on Route 95 northbound, police say.

The incident, which happened just after 5 a.m., closed all northbound lanes on 95 between exit 14 and 13 as crews responded to the scene.

Heavy delays persisted on 95 in the area of University Avenue hours after the crash happened.

According to police, the crash was caused after one of two cars, which had allegedly been racing each other, crashed into another car traveling northbound.

Preliminary investigation shows a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu, operated by 19-year-old David Hector, of Norwood, was allegedly racing a 2008 Hyundai Elantra, operated by a 19-year-old Dorchester man. A 17-year-old woman was in the passenger seat of the Elantra at the time of the crash.

As both cars were traveling just south of exit 13 in Westwood, the Elantra hit a 2001 Suzuki SUV, which was also traveling northbound.

The collision caused the driver of the Elantra to lose control, causing it to roll over and crash. During the rollover, both the driver and his passenger were ejected from the car.

Both occupants of the Elantra suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Boston hospitals.

The driver of the Suzuki suffered minor injuries and was transported to Faulkner Hospital for treatment.

Hector was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of drugs, racing a motor vehicle, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and marked lanes violation.

He is expected to be arraigned in Dedham District Court sometime Friday morning.

Boston 25 News had a drone fly over the scene, which showed police were only letting cars through the middle lane. causing severe delays for the morning commute.
