Thousands turn out for wake of fallen Worcester fire Lt. Jason Menard on Sunday

WORCESTER, Mass. — Services to honor fallen Worcester fire Lt. Jason Menard began Sunday afternoon with the late firefighter's wake.

Menard died on Wednesday while battling a four-alarm fire at 7 Stockholm Street in Worcester. He sacrificed his life to save two of his fellow firefighters from the burning home.

Calling hours were from 3 to 7 p.m. at Mercadante Funeral Home, and Menard will be laid to rest on Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, following a private family procession from the funeral home.

Thousands of first responders from across the country are expected to attend. Sunday's wake saw a large turnout from firefighters and others from all across New England.

People have been visiting Menard's firehouse in Worcester all week, paying their respects.

On Saturday, JetBlue sent one of their special aircraft to Worcester, the "Blue's Bravest," in honor of Menard.

The plane, painted red and inscribed for the New York City Fire Department, was requested to make a stop at Worcester Regional Airport by a local firefighter. About a dozen people stopped by the airport to pay tribute.

Menard leaves behind a wife and three children.

A memorial fund has been set up in honor of Lt. Menard. Online donations are being accepted at PFFMfoundation.org. Or you can send a donation to the Worcester Fire Department Credit Union on Glennie Street in Worcester.
