Roxbury woman dies after being stabbed in apparent domestic violence incident

BOSTON — A Roxbury woman died on Sunday after being stabbed multiple times, according to a release from Boston Police.

Officials have one man in custody, who they identified as Valdir Chaves, 43, of Roxbury. He has been charged with murder.

The incident occurred at Clarence Street in Roxbury where emergency services transported the victim from after responding to the call at 12:21 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. The woman was taken to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.

The victim's family identified her as Dora Chaves.

Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins called the stabbing a domestic violence incident.

"Today we have a family that is going to be deeply impacted by what happened here, and I really hope we are going to be speaking more about domestic violence and the work we have to do to try and end it," said DA Rollins.

Within the last couple of months, the landlord of the apartment building in Roxbury says he got some complaints about the married couple living at 32 Clarence St.

"That guy – he recently started acting like crazy, music all night sometimes on the porch and screaming bad words," said Augusto Pina, the landlord.

Pina was at church when his wife called him about an argument at the apartment.

"She heard the mom crying, screaming, so she came down," he said. "She called me [...] when I came I saw a lot of cops."

Neighbors say the couple had been married for at least 10 years and have two sons. At least one of the two boys was at home when the violence happened.

District Attorney Rollins said they are hoping to do more to provide resources for domestic violence victims before something like this happens.
