Roof collapses after fire destroys house in Newton

NEWTON, Mass. — A wood-frame house on Cook Street was destroyed by a three-alarm fire that eventually caused the roof to collapse.

Firefighters got a call around 1:30 this Wednesday morning from a passerby and found flames shooting from the attic, roof and windows when they arrived at the house on Cook Street.

It quickly spread to 3-alarms, with Brookline firefighters arriving to help. Newton Fire Captain Eric Fricke said the owner of the duplex, who was the only resident of the house, made it out safely. A cat also escaped unharmed.

Firefighters dealt with frozen hydrants and icy conditions on top of the frigid weather.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and firefighters remained at the scene through the morning putting out hotspots.
