PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island's governor and congressional delegation have commemorated Memorial Day.

The Democratic governor, congressmen and other state officials honored Americans who have died while serving the nation. The remembrances were held at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, Rhode Island.

Following a Monday afternoon speaking program, Raimondo participated in a traditional wreath-laying with Gold Star family members.

Raimondo also ordered U.S. and state flags on state buildings to be flown at half-staff over the weekend to observe Memorial Day.

She says it's a time to pay respects to all Americans throughout history who have given their lives to protect the nation.

Rhode Island Director of Veterans Affairs Kasim Yarn says the cost of freedom is high and Memorial Day is a chance to say thank you.
