Federal prosecutors in Boston said Thursday that 29-year-old Matthew Haviland, of North Kingstown, has agreed to plead guilty to stalking and transmitting a threat in interstate commerce.
According to court filings, prosecutors will seek a sentence of one year and nine months in prison.
Prosecutors say on March 10, Haviland sent the professor 28 emails containing messages that included threats such as, "I will rip every limb from your body and eat it, piece by piece."
Prosecutors say Haviland also sent 12 threatening emails to a professional school at the professor's university.
Neither the professor's name nor the college was disclosed.
