• Oldest Roman Catholic church in Woonsocket could close

WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) - The first Roman Catholic church in Woonsocket, Rhode Island has sent a letter to the Diocese of Providence asking to be shut down.

Rev. Joseph Upton of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church said in letter to parishioners that the principal reason was "the absence of parish life and activity," and declining attendance and membership.

Parishioner Richard Monteiro told WJAR-TV that the diocese has not "given us the support or what was necessary" to keep the nearly 150-year-old church open.

Officials said the total income for the church has fallen nearly 50% over five years and is no longer able to cover operating expenses.

A spokeswoman for the Diocese of Providence said Bishop Thomas Tobin has not made a formal decision.

The church asked to close on Jan. 5.
