• Lawmakers seek to form natural gas commission

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island lawmakers have filed a bill to create a commission to oversee a study of the state's natural gas and electricity system following a weeklong natural gas outage.

The Newport Daily News reports the commission would include the president of National Grid and the president of Enbridge, a Canadian company that owns the gas transmission pipeline that supplies natural gas to National Grid.

National Grid says a dramatic pressure drop forced it to suspend service to thousands of customers in Newport and Middletown in late January.

The previous owners of the gas pipeline announced a project in 2013 to expand natural gas flow to Aquidneck Island.

Democratic state Sen. Lou DiPalma says he specifically wants to know why the plan was dropped.
