Randolph teen hit and killed by truck

RANDOLPH, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A 17-year-old pedestrian was hit and killed by a tractor trailer truck Thursday morning.

Tonnecia Long was hit when the tractor trailer was turning and the rear part of the truck struck and killed her, Randolph police said.

As some investigators examine the tractor-trailer truck, others worked the spot a few hundred yards away, where police say it struck and killed Long.

Resident Tracui Owens could tell instantly that this one was bad.

"I just looked out the window and I just seen a lady just laying down on the ground I seen the ambulance and the fire department and they lifted her up and put her in the ambulance," he said.

Long was a senior at the BB Russel Alternative School in Brockton. Investigators say she was walking home from a convenience store around 10 a.m. Thursday morning when she was struck by the 18 wheeler in a busy area known as Crawford Square.

"There are witnesses in the case and we believe that she was struck by the rear of the vehicle," Police Chief William Pace said.

Police say the driver of the tractor trailer was making a right turn from South Main Street onto Union Street. Investigators are still trying to determine if Long was standing on the sidewalk or if she walked into the road as the truck rolled by.

A phone and ear buds were found at the scene. Police say the investigation will look at the possibility that she was distracted.

Another thing they will consider, the possibility the tractor trailer jumped the curb while making the right turn.

"There are a lot of issues in this square here with trucks being close to sidewalk, in fact the other day a truck hit one of the lights for the streets as a matter of fact," Jeff Greenberg of Woodlawn Auto Body said.

Massachusetts State Police towed the truck away for further investigation Thursday afternoon. No charges have been filed and the investigation remains ongoing.
