Rain puts Opening Day at Fenway on hold

BOSTON — It was almost opening day at Fenway Park and one year later there were supposed to be fans. But this year it was the rain that put everything on hold. Randy Reyhons and his buddy were convinced opening day was happening.

“We didn’t know until we were on the road driving up here that they canceled the game,” said Reyhons.

Missy Arnzen geared up with her safety shield for the pandemic home opener.

“Yes, I’m ready to go,” said Arnzen. But she too had a swing and a miss. “Terrible, just terrible outside. I wouldn’t rate it at all”

There were supposed to be about 4,500 fans on opening day but with the rain, there aren’t any fans but the ones we talked to say they will be back tomorrow.

“Oh yes, of course, we extended our stay,” said Arnzen.

The Red Sox Team store was dealing with the weather change up.

“It’s not what we are used to but it’s actually the people who are here just super excited,” said Red Sox Team Store Manager Scott Saklad. He also told us the fans who did show up to shop for souvenirs are excited to go to a game again.

“Everyone is just itching to get back. They’re fatigued. They want to get out, they want to get outside, they just want to watch some baseball,” said Saklad.

Cask N Flagon was also dealing with the weather delay. Owner Dana Van Fleet set up tables on Landsdowne so everyone can space out.

“We have been waiting a year, what is another day right,” said Van Fleet. The owner has worked 33 home openers. His head is already in the now tomorrow’s game -- and better forecast.

“What is better than a beautiful weather day on opening day for the Red Sox,” said Van Fleet.

Many of the businesses say this is going to be quite a season as the crowds hopefully continue to build as more and more people get vaccinated.
