Power outage leaves Concord residents in the dark during Super Bowl

CONCORD, Mass. — Parts of Concord lost power right as the Super Bowl was getting started, but electricity has since been restored to two-thirds of the affected customers.

Concord Police provided an update around 10 p.m. and said power remains out in the Thoreau Street business district and on Sudbury Road.

Malissa Wood, who lives by the high school, told Boston 25 News she was throwing a party at her house when the power went out.

“We have guests here and we were all kind of sitting around watching and everything went black,” Wood said. “Thankfully we had a lot of candles so we could quickly find our phones.”

Wood said her 18-year-old child, a senior in high school, used a phone hotspot to stream the Super Bowl on YouTube.

“We’re watching the game in the darkness on a computer,” Wood said.

Aside from a delay and bandwidth issues, everyone is comfortably watching the game at her home.

“We’re just going to make the most of it,” Wood said.

Another photo showed a group of guys huddled around a small cell phone watching the game.

Police said the power outages were isolated to Central and East Concord.

According to Concord Municipal Light Plant, workers isolated the outage area and re-routed power to two-thirds of the affected customers. The company didn’t have an estimate on when the remaining residents would have their power restored. Crews are working to identify and correct the source of the problem.

In addition to not being able to watch the game, the cold weather was also a factor. Boston 25 News Meteorologist Vicki Graf said the temperature in Concord at the time of the outage was in the low 30s.
