Police remind drivers, pedestrians to be alert following boy's close call

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – A close call after baseball practice is serving as a reminder for one young boy about the importance of looking both ways, and another reason for drivers to remain vigilant as warm weather settles in.

Twelve-year-old Joseph Sutherland was leaving baseball practice over the weekend when he was clipped by a car.

“Everyone there was saying, ‘one more second of you walking and you might not be there right now.’ And I was like yea,” the boy told Boston 25 News reporter Elysia Rodriguez.

After his baseball game was rained out Sunday at Legion Field - he started crossing Bedford Street to meet a friend’s mom who was giving him a ride home.”

“Apparently, we both must not have been looking as good as we could have,” he said referring to the driver. “The girl who was driving got out and she was like ‘oh my God’ I just hit a little boy I’m so sorry.”

Bridgewater police say Joseph’s story is a reminder for both drivers and pedestrians – especially as the weather warms up.

“We remind drivers of kids that might be running in the street and not in crosswalks or the number of people that might be out and about,” Chief Christopher Delmonte said.

Joseph also has a lesson learned, and a close call he can share with others.

“I think people need to be more careful, and not just the people who are driving but the people who are crossing the street too. They need to be careful and look both ways at least twice so they can absolutely know for sure that they have enough time to get from one side of the street to another if they aren’t using a crosswalk,” he said.

Joseph bumped his head but only suffered minor injuries. He’s looking forward to playing in his next baseball game.
