Police on Cape Cod searching for career criminal accused of attacking officer

PROVINCETOWN, Mass. — Police on Cape Cod are searching for a career criminal who’s accused of attacking a Provincetown officer.

An arrest warrant was issued for Darren Patrick Devine, 27, who’s believed to be homeless, following the alleged assault Friday morning.

According to Provincetown Police Sgt. Glenn Enos, Devine is already out on bail on charges connected to a break-in last year. He failed to show up to Orleans District Court on Tuesday for a scheduled pretrial hearing, which led to another warrant being issued for his arrest.

Provincetown Police responded to a home on Pearl Street around 9:30 a.m. Friday after the owner called to report Devine was coming to clean up a mess he had made and pick up items he left behind. An investigation into previous signs of squatting on the property turned up items that belonged to Devine.

When they got to the home, two officers noticed one of the windows was broken. While searching one of the buildings on the property, they heard a voice coming from a loft, asking, “Can I come down and not get shot?”

Officers said when they saw Devine, they recognized him from previous encounters.

According to the police report, as the officers were trying to handcuff Devine, he spun around and struck one of them in the face. The other officer deployed a taser and hit Devine in the back, but he still managed to get away.

Devine was a lengthy criminal history on the Cape, Sgt. Enos confirmed to Boston 25 News.

Yarmouth Police arrested Devine in February of 2010, when he was 18, on five outstanding warrants.

In September of 2010, Devine was convicted of multiple counts of breaking and entering (daytime and nighttime), possession of an explosive device, assault and battery on a police officer and numerous counts of breaking and entering of a vehicle and/or boat.

In 2012, Barnstable Police arrested Devine following a foot pursuit after they stopped him for acting suspicious in the parking lot of a closed auto dealership. Officers eventually caught up to him, tased him and placed him under arrest. He was wanted at the time for violating his probation. Devine was charged with disorderly conduct, trespassing, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and two felony default warrants for violation of probation.

During a well-being check in 2016, Devine allegedly attacked a Yarmouth Department of Natural Resources officer, grabbed his radio and then reached for his holstered firearm. The struggle continued until Devine stole the officer’s badge and ran off. A police K9 located him. He was charged with assault and battery on a police office, assault and battery on a police officer with intent to disarm, resisting arrest, and larceny under $250.

Most recently, Wellfleet Police arrested Devine in December when they said he broke into a house off Route 6. He was charge with two counts of breaking and entering in the nighttime with intent to commit a felony, trespassing and vandalism. He was released on bail earlier this month after undergoing a psychological exam at a state facility in Worcester where he was deemed competent to stand trial.

As of Tuesday evening, Devine remains on the run with four outstanding warrants for his arrest.

Anyone who knows Devine’s whereabouts is urged to call 911 immediately. He should be considered armed and dangerous.
