Police on Cape Cod arrest suspected drunken driver at road race starting line

BREWSTER, Mass. — Brewster Police arrested a suspected drunken driver at the starting line of a road race this past weekend.

Police said a 42-year-old New Hampshire woman drove her blue Dodge minivan into a parking lot Saturday that had been blocked off with traffic cones and police tape for the Brew Run Road Race.

"After running over several cones, a police officer on detail, along with several people preparing for the run, were quickly able to get the operator to stop," Police Chief Heath Eldredge said.

Officers arrested the driver and charged her with operating under the influence of alcohol, operating to endanger and a marked lanes violation.

The woman was taken to the police station where she was later bailed. She was scheduled to be arraigned in Orleans District Court on Monday.

"This incident happened as over 1,200 runners, plus spectators were gathering near the starting line," Eldredge said. "Thankfully, as a result of the quick action of the officers working and some bystanders, the situation was handled quickly and no one was injured."

Police didn't release the woman's name.
