MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. — A Middleborough police officer is now on leave following a crash involving an ATV while off-duty, the police chief announced Saturday.

Middleborough Police Chief Joseph Perkins said in a statement that the unidentified officer "was placed on administrative leave pending the results of an investigation by Massachusetts Environmental Police."

"The investigation stems from an incident in which the off-duty officer was allegedly involved in a crash while riding an ATV early Saturday morning in Middleborough," Perkins said.

The officer and a passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were both sent to the hospital, the police chief said.

Police turned the investigation over to the state Environmental Police, per departmental protocol with all crashes involving ATVs.

"Our department will also be conducting its own internal investigation into the matter," Perkins said.
