Police investigating multiple thefts from mailboxes

MILTON, Mass. — Officials in Milton, Massachusetts are investigating after a series of thefts from mailboxes in town.

“Over the past three months there has been thirty-one reported cases of checks being stolen from various mailboxes throughout town” Milton police said in a press release issued Friday afternoon.

Residential mailboxes, standard mailboxes, as well as tamper proof mailboxes have all been hit, according to police.

“The stolen checks are then being altered for large sums and cashed throughout the state at different financial institutions,” according to officials.

Police say the total sum of money fraudulently obtained is more than “one hundred thousand dollars.”

Police are asking the public to report suspicious activity around mailboxes. Officials also suggest the use of online banking, or hand delivering checks directly to the post office.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to give Milton Police Detective Gennes Seaton a call at 617-898-4836. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can call 617-698-COPS.
