Police investigating after two cars set on fire in South Boston

BOSTON — South Boston residents are concerned after two suspicious vehicle fires broke out. Police said the two fires were within blocks of each other. One of the two vehicles found burning was captured by a resident and posted to Twitter on Tuesday morning.

“When I actually saw it, I was in shock,” Emily Dowd, the car’s owner, told Boston 25 News. “I have never seen anything like that before.”

Dowd said her car, golf clubs and other items were completely destroyed. Her roommate is the one who alerted her.

“It’s like what you see in the movies,” Sophie Mulcahy said. “I haven’t seen a car torched like this before in person.”

The initial call for fire came in at 4:55 a.m. in the morning on Tuesday. A Jeep was on fire by Thomas Park and National Street. Conor Jennings was parked near it.

“I’m lucky I didn’t park any closer or it would have been a tough morning to wake up to today,” Jennings said.

Police said, when they responded to the fire for the Jeep, someone approached them saying there was another car fire a few blocks away.

“It’s shocking,” Daryl Caudry, a longtime South Boston resident said. “I don’t know exactly what happened. Two cars were on fire. Nothing like this ever happens; people hitting cars sometimes, but this is crazy.”

“It didn’t get towed, but it got set on fire,” Dowd joked, trying to stay positive while the Boston Police Department’s Fire Unit investigates what caused the fires and if they are connected.

“I’m just wondering why this happened to me. I’ve been parking in this spot for so long.”
