Police arrest man accused of attacking 4 people near same ATM in Stoughton

STOUGHTON, Mass. — After an extensive search, a brazen robber who police say attacked four people at the same ATM for two days in a row is now behind bars.

On Sunday morning, Ed Byron witnessed one of the attacks and tried to chase the man for several blocks, but the suspect managed to get away.

According to police, the man targeted customers who were using the Bank of America ATM on Washington Street for two consecutive days.

Caught by a surveillance camera, police say two people reported being robbed by the man.

Byron was across the street getting gas just before 11 a.m. when he saw some strange movement near the ATM.

“I had said to my wife that the Bank of America ATM across the street there was a gentleman in there with a hoodie on and he had let some people in and I said, 'That’s kind of weird, why would someone be in there?' and I said, 'I hope that’s not the guy from yesterday.'"

Moments later, Byron witnessed the robbery.

“He pushed the lady up against the glass and I just took off while my truck was still fueling and I’m chasing him down Washington Street and this guy was a jackrabbit," said Byron.

He then chased the suspect all the way down to the town hall, where he lost sight of him. Another man saw the chase and offered Byron a ride to continue looking.

"We went down by the apartments looking and we couldn’t find him," said Byron.

Police said they believe the suspect also robbed another person earlier that morning.

On Sunday night, at around 10 p.m., Stoughton Police announced on their Facebook page they had taken Kevin Johnson, 20, into custody for the robberies.

Johnson is set to be arraigned in Stoughton District Court on Tuesday on a number of felony charges.
