2 people dead after shooting in Jamaica Plain

BOSTON — Police are searching for the gunman who shot and killed two people in the city's Jamaica Plain neighborhood Monday night.

The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. near Mozart and Bolster streets, less than a mile from two elementary schools.

Police responded to the scene for a report of shots fired and found one man on Mozart Street with gunshot wounds, who was pronounced dead at the scene, and another man on Bolster Street who had also been shot and was rushed to the hospital but did not survive, Boston Police Commissioner William Gross said at a news conference late Monday.

Gross said both men were in their late 20s or early 30s. Police later identified the victims as Christian Green, 32, and Jose Martinez, 34.

The two deaths are the city's 19th and 20th homicides this year. There were 24 homicides at this time last year.

Police said Green is from New Bedford, while Martinez is local to Boston.

The double-fatal shooting is the latest in a streak of violence in the city.  On Sunday, 23-year-old Joshua Hines, of Mattapan, was shot and killed on Michigan Avenue in Dorchester.  And on Friday, 59-year-old Arnold Woodrum was shot and killed in inside an apartment on Devon Street in Dorchester, in what Mayor Marty Walsh said appears to be a random act.

Police have not announced any arrests or suspects in the deadly double shooting, and Gross pleaded with the public for help with the investigation.

"We can’t say it enough," he said, "This shouldn’t be tolerated in our neighborhoods and the only way to combat this is for all of us to work together and make sure whoever is responsible is prosecuted and put away."

Trauma response teams will be available throughout the neighborhood Tuesday.
