CHICOPEE, Mass. - A Chicopee Police officer has shot and injured a man who may have been suicidal and refused to drop a large knife he was holding.
A spokesman for the Hampden district attorney says Chicopee police responded to an apartment at about 1 a.m. Wednesday for a well-being check after a caller said he was receiving disturbing messages from a co-worker he believed to be suicidal.
Responding officers found 55-year-old Dauda Handan standing in a doorway of his unit holding a large kitchen knife in a threatening manner.
Authorities say he refused to drop the knife, so police used a stun gun, which failed to subdue him. The second officer fired twice, striking Handan in the abdomen and arm. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.
The suspect faces assault and battery charges. The officer has been placed on leave pending an investigation.
