Orleans considering balloon ban

ORLEANS, Mass. — The town of Orleans could be the latest in the state to ban balloons.

The Board of Selectmen voted this week to hear a proposal on the ban sometime this spring. The bylaw would ban the sale and distribution of balloons inflated with helium or other lighter-than-air gas.

Anyone who violates the law would face a fine of up to $50.

The proposal is meant to cut down on litter that can harm wildlife. Both Chatham and Nantucket have balloon bans in place.
