• Officials warn beachgoers after shark sighted in Wareham

    Updated:

WAREHAM, Mass. - Just days after a 26-year-old Revere man died after he was bitten by a shark in Wellfleet, the Wareham Department of Natural Resources is alerting people to a potential shark sighting.

The shark, reportedly a 12 foot long great white, was last seen Sunday, Sept. 16 between Stony Point Dike and Wings Neck, in the Old Cape Cod Canal, according to a Facebook post.

They stressed that no beaches have been closed due to the sighting but they are sharing to make people aware.

They also cautioned that ocean sunfish, or mola mola, are often mistaken for sharks when they swim near the water's surface because of their large dorsal fin.
