Officer shot overnight in Springfield, expected to recover

A St. Louis police officer is accused of driving a van too roughly to punish two prisoners, court documents claim.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A Springfield Police officer has been hospitalized after being shot twice overnight Sunday, according to a spokesman for the department.

Officer Edwin Irizarry was shot twice in the arm around 2 a.m. on early Sunday morning in the area of 1200 State St. in Springfield. Irizarry is expected to recover.

Police arrested Kenneth Hernandez, 25, of Springfield and recovered the firearm used in the incident. Hernandez has been charged with two counts of Firearm-Armed Assault to Murder along with Carrying a Firearm Without a License, Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building, three counts of Malicious Damage to a Motor Vehicle, and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.

The Springfield Police Major Crimes Unit is investigating the matter. Irizarry has been a police officer since 2007.
