Nightly fireworks causing headaches for South End, South Boston residents

BOSTON — You don’t even have to wait for the sun to do down before the fireworks go up in Southie, lately.

“We are here every night and we hear them over here,” said Bobby, a local resident.

“It might be more this year because everyone’s bored, everyone wants to see a show, [or] something,” added Dave, a park-goer in Boston’s South End. “I think we are all ‘Netflixed’ out. Let’s go down the park and make some stuff go boom.”

“We’re here every night and all you can hear is boom, boom, boom,” said Dennis, another local resident.

It’s making for long nights and even disrupting daytime and work activities. Local dogs are freaking out and Southie residents like Megan and her daughter are stressed out.

“It like echoes, so hearing the fireworks all night long and you don’t know if it’s a gunshot or a firework,” she said.

There has been no word from Boston Police on if there is a solution in sight. Residents who spoke with Boston 25 News agree that the problem is worse than ever; they have their own ideas as to why.

“I just think with everything going on, everyone’s bored, nothing is open, people are honestly getting stir crazy,” Bobby said.

“Everyone’s bored because kids have been out of school for a month, young guys blowing off steam, you know?” added Dave.

“You also canceled the Fourth of July so you got to have fireworks somewhere. Kind of stinks with the coronavirus that’s going on,” Dennis said.

Boston Police said that if you know of anyone selling or storing illegal fireworks, contact Crime Stoppers.

It’s not just the South End that’s being plagued by excessive fireworks. Cambridge Police tell Boston 25 News that they have had a recent increase in calls and complaints, especially over the last few weeks.

It’s the level of calls they usually don’t see until late June or early July.
