NH man charged with theft after stealing from 85-year-old veteran

A New Hampshire man turned himself into police on Wednesday after allegedly stealing from an 85-year-old veteran at a local Market Basket.

Matthew Siwik, 37, of Goffstown, was charged by Manchester police with theft by unauthorized taking.

The veteran told police that on Sept. 9 around 2 p.m. as he walked to his car to load his groceries, he saw a silver Volkswagon driving slowly in the parking lot. When he turned his back to unlock his truck, a man jumped out of his car, grabbed his wallet and took off.

The veteran’s wallet had a bank card, which Siwik later tried to use at 7-Eleven’s on Queen City Ave. and South Main Street. The wallet was later found in a trash barrel at the Queen City location and was returned to the veteran.

Siwik’s picture was posted on social media and various news outlets, and he was soon recognized.

He is scheduled to appear in Hillsborough Superior Court North on Sept. 26.
