Newton police release new video of possible suspects in string of home break-ins

NEWTON, Mass. — Police in Newton are searching for burglars that broke into five different homes in one night. Now police are hoping some new surveillance video will help lead them to the suspects.

Newton police released video from a neighbor’s home camera taken this past Friday night between 7 and 8 p.m. Two people are seen getting out of what appears to be a silver or gray Infiniti SUV on Highland Avenue in Newton. The SUV has tint on the front windows.

Police believe those two people could be involved in the five break-ins that happened in a few different neighborhoods Friday night between 7 and 10 p.m.

In only one case, a person was home at the time of the break-in. A woman whose house on Warwick Road was broken into. She says there was a knife left by the bathroom window the suspects pried open to get inside. Says they made a mess of her house and stole her jewelry and computers.

“Everything can be replaced and as soon as the window is fixed I’ll sleep here,” said Suzanne Winton. “I hope lightning doesn’t strike and it’s nice now that all the neighbors are kind of keeping an eye out.”

In a few cases, Newton police say the suspects broke into second-story windows.

“If you have any sort of outside objects like a bench, chairs, gas grill, something that someone can climb upon to use to enter a second floor window, a second floor door, we’re urging you, if you can, get those away from your home,” said Lieutenant Bruce Apotheker with Newton Police.

Friday night’s break-ins follow a half dozen home break-ins last month, and in at least three of them residents were home at the time. They happened in the Newton Highlands and Waban Neighborhoods.

Police are reminding people to lock their doors, windows and cars. They are also asking residents to leave their outdoor lights on overnight and make sure their cameras are working.

Anyone with information is urged to call police.
