MLB condemns 'ignorant individuals' who made alleged racist comments at Fenway

BOSTON — Major League Baseball has taken a strong stance against the alleged racist comments made at Fenway Park Monday night.

Baltimore Orioles center fielder Adam Jones reportedly says his trip to Fenway included one of the worst cases of fan abuse he’s heard in his career.

Jones, who is African-American, told a handful of newspaper reporters that a fan threw a bag of peanuts at him and called him the a derogatory term a handful of times.

In response, Major League Baseball issued a statement saying, "the behavior of these few ignorant individuals does not reflect the millions of great baseball fans who attend our games."

The Red Sox and the City of Boston issued formal apologies to Jones Tuesday morning, with the Sox vowing to take further action against spectators as necessary.

The full statement from MLB read:

"The racist words and actions directed at Adam Jones at Fenway Park last night are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated at any of our ballparks. My office has been in contact with the Red Sox, and the club has made it clear that they will not tolerate this inexcusable behavior. Our 30 clubs will continue to work with fans and security to provide a family-friendly environment. Any individual who behaves in such offensive fashion will be immediately removed from the ballpark and subject to further action."
