MIT Police investigating break-ins on campus

Boston, Mass. — MIT Police are investigating recent burglaries that occurred at campus buildings, according to a memo sent out by MIT Police Sgt. Andrew Turco.

Someone broke into the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity house, located at 485 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, sometime between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday. Earlier this week, the building at 487 Commonwealth Avenue was burglarized.

Right now, police don’t have a suspect in either case.

The incidents have happened at eight different buildings from July 3 to July 11, and is causing multiple universities to put their students on high alert.

In the first burglary, a laptop and wallet were stolen, and the thief is believed to have climbed a fire escape and broken in through an open window.

A few days later and a few doors down, Nu Delta was hit.

"It was just a gaming system and a bag," Jerry Akinsclire said. "It probably happened when no one was around in the building, so somebody came back really late around 8 p.m., and they found out that their stuff was missing.

At Delta Tau Delta, a bicycle was stolen from an unattached rear garage, and another bicycle was also snatched from a storage area of Sigma Chi. Multiple items were stolen in one incident, with two unknown men caught on camera.

Akinsclire said MIT notified students about the break-in at his frat house and all the others.

MIT Police are asking the MIT community for help. If you have any information, call 617-258-TIPS (8477). You can remain anonymous.
