Milwaukee to enforce 10 p.m. curfew after 2 nights of protests

Police are pelted with rocks and shots rang out in Milwaukee, Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016.

MILWAUKEE — Authorities in Milwaukee announced on Monday that an existing 10 p.m. curfew for teens will be strictly enforced following two nights of violent protests against a deadly police-involved shooting that took place Saturday.

"This is not the place where you go to gawk, this is not the place where you go to take pictures," Mayor Tom Barrett said at a news conference. "This is not the place where you go to drive your car around."

Protests erupted Saturday in the city's Sherman Park neighborhood after Sylville Smith, 23, was fatally shot by an officer. Police said Smith was fleeing from authorities with a stolen handgun and that bodycam footage showed he was holding the gun when he was shot.

As the sun dawned Monday, police had 14 people in custody – 11 men and three women – on charges of state disorderly conduct. Three police cars were damaged in the protests overnight and one business saw its windows smashed.

Multiple people were injured, including an 18-year-old man who was shot. Police Chief Ed Flynn said the man's injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Four deputies with the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office were injured as demonstrators threw rocks. Three police officers were also hurt.

Police took to social media to keep the public updated during the overnight protests.
