Memorial Day weekend flight delays and cancellations

BOSTON, Mass. — Kevin and Bryn Staley planned to come home Sunday so they could be home for Memorial Day. “Got delayed in Charlottesville airport, had to stay overnight,” said Kevin Staley. Thousands of flights were canceled around the country on this busy Memorial Day Weekend. Not everyone’s trip went smoothly.

“The plane we were supposed to leave on broke the landing gear and the maintenance crew wasn’t around,” said Staley. Because that plane could not fly, they had to wait a day for another one. Today’s flight lost their bags. “This is one of the worst airport and flight experiences I have had, just the touch down and the delays and Delta was not the best,” said Bryn Staley.

Delta Airlines had some of the most delays and cancellations with hundreds of flights eliminated on Saturday. Delta told us that it has been dealing with several factors including weather, staffing and ongoing COVID-19 complications. Other airlines had similar issues over the holiday weekend. “My sister who is traveling back to Dallas, got delayed, about four hours,” a woman said.

AAA projected more than 3 million people were expected to fly for the Memorial Day weekend.
