MassDOT announces free MBTA service New Year's Eve night, travel advisory

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation rolled out a plan for the upcoming New Year's crowd and is advising everyone to plan ahead, drive sober and take note of their holiday travel advisory.

To ensure a safe trip to and from home, MassDOT announced a few schedule changes -- and some free coffee, too!

According to their advisory, all MBTA services will be free after 8 p.m., Monday, December 31, until the end of service.

They are also serving free coffee at 18 MassDOT service plazas on New Year's Eve. The locations include service plazas along I-90, plazas along Route 3 in Plymouth, Route 128 in Beverly, Route 128/I-95 in Newton and Lexington, Route 6 in Barnstable, and the Route 24 northbound and southbound plazas.

MassDOT will be shutting down scheduled road work at 5 a.m. Friday until Wednesday, January 2, 2019 for safety reasons.

Other schedule information to take note of: 

•  All subway lines will operate a weekend schedule on 12/31, with trains then operating at rush-hour levels of service from 3 p.m., until  2 a.m. and on Tuesday 1/2, all subway lines will operate on a Sunday schedule.

•  On Monday 12/31, the Commuter Rail will operate a weekday schedule and provide late-night service. Trains will make all stops enroute to their destinations. Bicycles are prohibited on all inbound trains between 10 a.m., and 6 p.m., and all outbound trains from 4 p.m., through the end of service on New Year’s Eve. Trains will operate on a Sunday schedule on 1/1.

•    Buses will operate on a regular weekday schedule on 12/31, and will operate on a Sunday schedule 1/1.

•    Ferry service will operate on a regular weekday schedule on New Years Eve. There will be no ferry service on New Years Day.
