• Woman to avoid prison time for Social Security theft

BOSTON (AP) - A Massachusetts woman who pleaded guilty to stealing her dead mother's Social Security benefits has avoided prison.

The Patriot Ledger reports 55-year-old Catherine Anzalone, of Rockland, was sentenced Wednesday to a year of home confinement and ordered to repay more than $155,000 to the Social Security Administration.

Prosecutors say Anzalone kept collecting her mother's Social Security benefits after her mother died in April 2000.

Authorities say the agency was never notified of the death, and it continued to deposit the benefits until April 2017.

Anzalone was arrested in February 2018, and she originally faced up to 10 years in prison.
