Mayor Martin Walsh and Boston Public Schools Superintendent Tommy Chang joined students at Bradley Elementary school in East Boston to launch a kitchen construction program in 30 schools.
The "My Way Cafe" program is an expansion of an existing year-old pilot program where schools with in-service kitchens prep healthy food for nearby schools without kitchens. Special hybrid kitchens are also being constructed at some schools without any place to prepare food. The rate of students eating lunch provided by schools has increased between seven to 15 percent per school.
Toro restaurant chef Ken Oringer has helped teach food service staff to cook new menu items.
The idea is to get students to stop eating junk food, and to have access to healthy food at school.
