• Developer plans to build apartments at church complex

SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts developer has purchased a church complex and plans to turn part of the site into apartments.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that Randolph-based Rivera Real Estate Development LLC paid $325,000 Monday for the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Southbridge. According to property records, the roughly three-acre site was valued at more than $5.4 million in 2018.

The church will be kept intact while other parts of the property will be converted to apartments.

The Roman Catholic parish was established in 1908. Church officials announced in 2010 that Sacred Heart would close and merge with Notre Dame Church. According to parish documents, the church needed $22,700 monthly but only collected $2,400 each week.

The Rev. Ken Cardinale says the deal will bring "new quality housing" to town.
