Council President Andrea Campbell said during a Monday hearing that term extensions would strengthen the role of the Boston City Council, making it more "autonomous." The Boston Globe reports that in addition to extending the nonpartisan council's terms from two to four years, Campbell proposes banning candidates from running for two city positions at once and requiring special elections for council vacancies in at-large seats.
Under current city rules, Althea Garrison ascended to Democratic U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley's council seat without another election following Pressley's election to Congress.
Garrison opposed Campbell's proposal Monday. The full council is slated to consider the proposals Wednesday.
