Many on whale watch get sick as boat encounters 6-foot seas

PLYMOUTH, Mass. — A large amount of people on one whale watching boat got sick Sunday morning as rough seas tossed the boat around.

Samantha Waterman said it was the first trip on a whale watch for her family, and about 25 minutes in their tour took a turn.

“The waves just picked up, we got soaked, then we ended up going in the cabin--next thing you know everyone is getting sick,” she said.

The Captain John whale watch left from Plymouth Harbor toward Stellwagen Bank in search of humpbacks, minkes, right whales and more.

“Six-to-eight foot seas, even in a good-sized boat. It’s kind of a lot for them to handle,” Assistant Plymouth Harbormaster Mike Dawley said.

The boat was never in any danger, but over the phone Captain John manager Bob Avila said the crew probably should have turned around sooner.

“It was gross, I could tell that everyone else was affected,” passenger Joshua Waterman said.

Avila said passengers should have been able to see the waves coming at them, but that didn’t prevent a large amount of people on board from getting sea sick.

Still, passengers said the crew was helpful.

“They were running get bags paper towels, trash barrels,” Samantha Waterman said.

The Watermans say they were reimbursed for the rocky trip and it wouldn't dissuade them from going back again in the future.
