Man who fled the country arraigned in barbershop shooting

WORCESTER, Mass. — A man has been returned to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic to face charges in a fatal shooting at a Worcester barbershop in 2013, prosecutors said Monday.

Eduardo Montero, 42, was arraigned Monday in Worcester Superior Court in connection with the death of Eliezer Rivera, 30, in the former Fadeaway Barbershop

Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early said Montero was ordered held without bail. His next court date is March 10.

He faces charges including murder, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without a license, and possession of ammunition without a firearms identification card.

Montero's lawyer didn't respond to an email seeking comment.

Police said Montero shot Rivera in the chest after a verbal dispute became physical. Rivera was rushed to the hospital but died.

A warrant for Montero's arrest was issued at the time, but authorities said he fled the country.

Early’s office said he was arrested last year in his native Dominican Republic and returned to the U.S. on Friday accompanied by U.S. Marshals.
