Man suspected in Clinton murder found dead in prison hospital

CLINTON, Mass. — The man suspected in a February homicide was found dead Thursday, according to correctional staff.

Dean Valchuis was found unresponsive with a ligature around his neck at the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital Correctional Unit, according to the Massachusetts Department of Corrections.

In February, police found 58-year-old Roger Bemis deceased inside his apartment. According to the District Attorney's office, investigators believed the victim had been dead for several days before they found him.

Bemis had injuries that led investigators to suspect foul play was involved, which led them to obtain a search warrant and interview neighbors and residents in the area.

Officers quickly developed information leading them to suspect Valchuis, 48, of Berlin, Massachusetts.

State Police say they found Valchuis at his home. They said they heard moaning coming from the backyard and found Valchuis lying on the ground suffering from serious injuries. They said Valchuis had fallen from a tree stand.

Valchuis was transported to a local hospital and was charged with assault and battery causing bodily injury, but more charges could be added.
