Man shot and killed by police in Lynn identified

LYNN, Mass. — Three police officers shot and killed a man in Lynn Monday morning, according to the Essex County District Attorney's Office.

It happened in a condo building at 300 Lynn Shore Drive as officers were attempting to serve a warrant on 57-year-old Robert Dapkus, who was wanted in connection to the armed robbery of the Porthole restaurant on Sept. 26.

Police say officers announced themselves at the door, to which the suspect replied they were not going to take him.

A woman who was in the apartment told police Dapkus had a gun pointed at the door and she ran into her bedroom. Police say they forced their way into the apartment and retreated when they saw the gun.

When Dapkus came out of the apartment with the gun, police said all three officers shot him.

Officials say he was pronounced dead on scene, but there were no other injuries reported.

A red Cadillac parked outside the apartment building has become part of the investigation.

According to Bob Gaudet, the owner of the Porthole restaurant, that vehicle belonged to a regular customer. The man who was killed by police is believed to be the same one who tied up a man in the restaurant and stole bags of cash.

Mass. State Police detectives are investigating.

Police identified the victim as Robert Dapkus Tuesday morning. This story has been updated to reflect his identity.
