Malden Police warning residents of door-to-door scam

MALDEN — Police have identified a man they had previously warned residents about.

On Thursday, Malden Police warned residents to be cautious of scammers who are going door-to-door trying to get into their homes.

Police said the scammers are knocking on doors and asking homeowners, “Do you remember ordering Amber Alert ID Kits to the Police Union?”

A man shown in photos released by police identified himself as "Philip," police said. He said the order is made through a “McGruff” link; police believe scammers may be gaining information from the link.

"The Malden Police Department is not aware of this 'business' and believes it may be a SCAM, in an attempt to gain access into your home," Malden Police said in a statement Thursday.

On Friday morning, Malden Police told Boston 25 News they identified the man, who they say was working for a sales company. Police spoke with the company and say they told them the "proper way to check into local police departments and wear proper identification."

Anyone who feels they may be getting scammed urged to call Malden Police immediately.
