Malden High School virtual event attacked with hate speech

MALDEN, Mass. — A virtual event for Malden parents and students was attacked by uninvited guests Wednesday night, according to a letter sent to parents.

About 20 minutes into the presentation, which was attended by about 250 parents and students, someone or some people gained access to and control over the virtual meeting.

According to the letter, the attackers said hateful and profane things. It only lasted about 12-15 seconds before school officials shut it down.

“We deeply apologize for this horrible and traumatizing event. The fact that this occurred at a Malden High School event is far beyond disappointing,” Supt. Oteri said in his statement to families. “It is extremely troubling and highly inconsistent with the inclusive culture that we are committed to at Malden High School— a culture in which there is absolutely no place for hate.”

Police were called to the school and are investigating the attack.

LETTER TO FAMILIES

Dear Malden High School Families,

Tonight, during our virtual Back to School Night, we had a terrible incident where an individual or individuals entered the online forum and spread vile, racist, and threatening language. We immediately shut down the online forum on Zoom. We have reported this incident to the Malden Police who will conduct a full investigation. We are assisting them in any way we can on this heinous act. As soon as the investigation is concluded, and if we can identify the person(s) responsible, we will follow up with legal action within the laws of Massachusetts. We deeply apologize for this horrible and traumatizing event.

The fact that this occurred at a Malden High School event is far beyond disappointing. It is extremely troubling and highly inconsistent with the inclusive culture that we are committed to at Malden High School - a culture in which there is absolutely no place for hate.

Again, please know that we are deeply committed to the goals that all students are safe, and that all students develop empathy and respect for others. I will keep you updated on our progress.
