MA will do everything it can to help family of fallen U.S. Marine

LAWRENCE, Mass. — Just as the last U.S. troops leave Afghanistan Monday after a 20-year war, families are only beginning to grieve their loved ones killed in a bombing there last week. One of those families is in Lawrence, where U.S. Marine Sergeant Johanny Rosario grew up.

She was one of 13 U.S. Service Members killed in that attack, and now MA Gov. Baker says the state will do everything they can to help her family.

“There’s no question that these people were selfless, there’s no question that they were heroes and there’s no question that they and their fellow servicemen and women are among the very best of what this country has to offer,” Gov. Baker said Monday.

The City of Lawrence is also standing by to honor Rosario’s life as they wait for her body to be returned home. The 25-year-old graduated from Lawrence High School and attended Bridgewater State University before joining the Marines.

“The City of Lawrence will be going to pick up one of their daughters and we will show them respect and honor that her sacrifice and the sacrifice that her family is enduring we will honor it,” said Jaime Melendez, director of Veterans Services for the City of Lawrence.

As the state and City of Lawrence gear up to honor this fallen marine, Gov. Baker said the state is also ready to help Afghan refugees who may need a place to go after this attack.

“We’ve been in conversations with the feds about this and made clear to them we’ll be as helpful as we can be when we need to be,” Gov. Baker said.

The City of Lawrence plans to assist Sergeant Rosario’s family is hosting a vigil to honor her Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Lawrence.
