Woman shot in leg while sleeping in Somerville apartment

SOMERVILLE, Mass. — A woman is recovering after she was shot in the leg while sleeping inside her Somerville apartment early Saturday morning.

The victim’s family told Boston 25 News that she was sleeping next to her 6-year-old daughter when gunfire rang out around 3:30 a.m. outside their Memorial Road apartment. The woman was rushed to the hospital. Her daughter was not hurt.

An air conditioner in the window of the first-floor apartment was riddled with bullet holes. The bullets also tore through a Bible that was lying nearby, leaving holes on every page.

Boston 25 News spoke to the woman’s brother on the phone. He said his sister was still in the hospital and in pain, and that her injuries will likely require rehabilitation.

“She is such a nice woman,” said Blanca Aguiar, who lives in the same building and woke up to the sound of gunshots. “I was asleep in my room and I heard the boom, boom, boom. I woke up, I look out the window, I don’t see nobody outside. It’s just scary to live here.”

Aguiar said there have been several shootings in the area recently and her family no longer feels safe. “Almost every single day something happens here,” Aguiar said. “The kids don’t want to go outside. The kids are scared.”

In addition to surveillance cameras, Aguiar wants police to patrol the area more often. “I want to see more police go around, see what happens, because it’s not safe here,” Aguiar said.

Boston 25 News reached out to Somerville Police for more information and to see if any arrests had been made; they have not returned our calls or emails.
