Wet weather impacts ‘Allston Christmas’

BOSTON — Every year it is a quite a circus: Everyone moving out on the 31st and everyone moving in on the 1st.

It’s often referred to as “Allston Christmas” because new tenants are moving in, with the city sending inspectional services down to make sure people did not end up with potential issues inside their new homes.

The awful forecast made an already chaotic moving day even worse.

Reva Klein helped her daughter moved in.

“It’s a disaster. I was just expecting a horror show which it is,” said Klein.

Boston Inspectional Services sent crews out to help students deal with issues and concerns about re-using rain soaked furniture.

Jessica Thomas is the Assistant Commissioner of Constituent Services with Boston Inspectional Services Department.

“Do not pick up used furniture, they could have the potential to have bed bugs and carry diseases. it’s tempting because some people leave out nice things,” said Thomas.

The biggest issue for students was lining up the window to move.

Matt Hamelsky, a BU student, explained.

“Every rental expires on the new place that moves in so we have 3 hours where our stuff is literally sitting on the street,” said Hamelsky.

Boston Public Works had extra garbage trucks on hand to remove some of the furniture left behind since it is was expected to rain even harder later Wednesday evening.
