Wet, snowy Saturday leaves drivers struggling to get around

LEXINGTON, Mass. — Drivers faced some brutal conditions on the roads Saturday night with snow, rain and strong winds.

“I just want to get home [and] stay inside, I cannot do this,” said Nancy Nieves, who pulled over at a rest stop in Lexington while driving through the storm.

Most towns got a few inches of snow, forcing plows to work into the night to clear the roads.

“I like the snow, I like the winter, but not necessarily this,” said Jarome Iginla. “May be a little too much.”

Visibility was poor on the highways as heavy snow came down for a few hours. Getting around was a challenge, even for those who are used to this.

“Pretty tough, we’re from Canada, so it’s not too crazy,” Iginla said. “I mean we got some winter tires. Used to this growing up so, it’s not great, I’ll tell you, you get some tough stretches, but if you don’t go too fast it’s doable.”

“It’s very slippery, we’re not passing 20, 30, it’s very dangerous,” Nieves said. “I recommend stay inside.”

But for some, staying inside wasn’t an option as crews cleared sidewalks and roads to keep everyone safe.

“It’s very unsafe, you can barely see anything, lanes, nothing. It’s horrible, I don’t like it,” Nieves said. “Going back home and staying home.”

Winter driving tips from MassDOT:

- Clear snow and ice from all windows and lights, even the hood and roof, before driving, (start with the tailpipe).

- Leave plenty of room for stopping

- Remember that the posted speed limits are for dry pavement.

- Use brakes carefully. Brake early. Brake correctly. It takes more time and distance to stop in adverse conditions.

- Bridge decks freeze first. Due to the difference in the exposure to air, the surface condition can be worse on a bridge than on the approach road.

- Exit ramps are an even greater challenge during the winter since they may have received less anti-icing material than the main line.

- Leave room for maintenance vehicles and plows – stay back at least 200 feet and don’t pass on the right.

- Seat belts should be worn at all times – it’s the law.

- Most importantly please remember to slow down.
