Waltham holds third public hearing in response to series of unprovoked attacks in the city

WALTHAM, Mass. — On Thursday, Waltham held a third public hearing via Zoom in response to a series of vicious, unprovoked attacks in the city dating back to Nov. 10th.

“It’s a good thing I don’t go out at night,” said Brian Stone, a Waltham resident.

Waltham Police are not sure if the attacks have been perpetrated by one person or if a group is responsible for the crimes.

On Tuesday, the city offered a $5,000 reward to whomever could help lead them to the suspect or suspects and tips began pouring in. But still, no one is in custody.

So far, 11 people have been attacked. All the victims say they were attacked by a man from behind and each was hit with a blunt object, where some were beaten badly. Police are not sure what the object is.

Police did this release a new video on Thursday which shows a suspect walking around on Bedford and Prospect streets, where neighbors say they are on edge.

“That’s unbelievable, I mean it’s right out on the Main Street here, that is wild,” said David Morgan.

Morgan, like everyone in the city, hopes they catch the suspect or suspects soon.

”I hope so, I hope to god that’s why I’m glad I’m out here in the daylight and not a little later on,” said Morgan.

The attacks started in the area of the Garden Crest Apartments then moved downtown where police say they got more violent.

“The degree of injury inflicted was higher [downtown],” said Sergeant Steve McCarthy.

Police also released some new information Thursday night:

  • There is no age or racial group being targeted
  • The attacks did happen close to each victim’s home
  • All have happened in the dark from 5:30pm to 11:30pm

At this point, however, Waltham Police say there is little to go on despite the large number of attacks.

“One of the bigger issues is the lack of evidence that has come up at these scenes,” said McCarthy.
