Utility crews secure gas main that was ruptured early Friday in Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Mass. — A ruptured gas main forced the evacuation of several homes in Georgetown, Massachusetts Friday morning, according to area fire officials.

It was initially unclear how the gas main was ruptured, but National Grid crews were dispatched along with fire crews at 7:30 a.m. to secure the area and evacuate homes.

As of 8:55 a.m., crews had made the scene safe and people were allowed to go back inside their homes. According to National Grid, a third-party contractor damaged the gas main, but it is still unclear how.

Georgetown police officers began going door to door to evacuate homes around 7:42 a.m., officials said.

Searle Street, Tenney Street and Marlboro Road in Georgetown were temporarily closed while crews worked on the gas main. They have since been reopened to drivers.
