BOSTON — The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department announced on Wednesday that two detainees that had been mistakenly released from the county jail have since returned to custody.
The two men, Ricardo Encarnacion, 26, and Israel Diaz, 20, were released from the Suffolk County Jail due to an error in processing court documents. As soon as the mistake was discovered, officials organized the return of both detainees to the department’s custody.

“We have a deep understanding of the responsibility that we have to keep our communities and those in our custody safe,” said Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins.” We have stringent protocols in place that are designed to prevent such an event from occurring, and this was a case of human error that resulted in a breach of those protocols. We are currently investigating the circumstances of this incident and evaluating additional protocols as prevention against any potential breaches in the future. Additionally, we would like to commend our Field Supervision Unit for their swift action and resolution to this matter.”
